Interaction Design

Interaction Design is at the center of my design practice. A clear understanding of use cases, usability issues, and best practices form the foundation of any design project. While my initial forays into web design were driven largely by my own intuition, gut, and sense of aesthetics, time and experience have taught me the essential value of research to understand the needs of each project, and to guide the solutions for them.

The work samples shown in this section cover a variety projects where I have led the interaction design work, and for most have performed significant usability studies.

Online Banking: HELOC Transactions

Like other enterprise design projects I’ve led, the Home Equity Transactions initiative entailed working closely with a broad range of partners - experts from business, technology, coding, marketing, and UX disciplines.

This ambitious project will massively upgrade the online functionality and features for HELOC account holders: transaction registers, filters, improved access to transaction history and statements, and an interactive demo all contribute to provide the customer control and access to their information.

Bank of America: Deposit Image ATMs

In 2007, I had the chance to architect the deposit experience for Bank of America’s next-generation ATMs. With these Deposit Image machines, customers insert a stack of checks directly into the machine - no envelope - for quicker processing and credit to their accounts.

Working with tight deadlines and a team spread across the U.S., we delivered the new application - over 20 unique screens - on time, to rave reviews.

With nearly 8000 image-enabled ATMs now deployed across the US, Bank of America has the largest fleet of such machines in the hemisphere.

Account Management Kiosk

The Account Management Kiosk was a unique chance to explore the porting of Bank of America’s existing online banking functionality to a touchscreen-based experience.

This R&D project, though ultimately never funded for production, entailed a great deal of research and demanded a number of creative solutions for delivering the complex environments of a keyboard and mouse-based interface on a touchscreen-based platform.

Wells Fargo webATM

While working for Wells Fargo as the lead designer for the webATM user interface, I led team responsible for ATM UI design.

Wells Fargo has a legacy of leadership in the ATM customer experience. As custodian of this mantel for nearly four years, I worked to maintain the tradition of secure and easy transactions, while improving the flexibility of the interface to accommodate new, sophisticated transaction types.
