Bank of America: Deposit Image ATMs

In 2007, I had the chance to architect the deposit experience for Bank of America’s next-generation ATMs. With these Deposit Image machines, customers insert a stack of checks directly into the machine - no envelope - for quicker processing and credit to their accounts.

Working with tight deadlines and a team spread across the U.S., we delivered the new application - over 20 unique screens - on time, to rave reviews.

With nearly 8000 image-enabled ATMs now deployed across the US, Bank of America has the largest fleet of such machines in the hemisphere.

sample screens:
The Deposit Confirmation screen. Extensive testing and dozens of explorations led us to find a visually airy layout, while maintaing the essential information and controls for the customer to move forward. Bulk Check visual design
The Check Details screen. Large check images provide ample visual evidence. Translucent control bars contain check data, an icon, and action label. Page navigation is simple and proved very successful in usability testing. Bulk Check check details screen
Receipt Options. With a touchscreen interface that supports 7 languages and uses large font sizes, fitting a phrase like ‘Summary (No images) onto a button can be problematic. We focused on text brevity, and used the larger button size. Another successful interface innovation. Bulk Check receipt selection visual
